La traffic los angeles8/18/2023 ![]() ![]() There's few neighborhoods in LA where you can reasonably get around without owning a car unless you want most of your day spent walking, biking, or waiting on a bus just to get to and from one destination.Įven if you live in one of these neighborhoods, it's still dangerous as hell because people are irritated at pedestrians for getting in the way of their drive or taking too long at crosswalks. On top of this, there's not enough protected bike lanes to make biking to work feasible. I've seen too much broken glass in the middle of intersections and wrecked cars being scraped off of crosswalks at intersections to reasonably expect that LA gives a flying fuck about making their cities walkable/bikeable. Even if you are able to get close to your job where you can walk or bike, it's fucking dangerous because of the shit city design. It's too expensive to live close to your job, so you can at least take a bus, walk, or bike. WalMart closed about 200 stores that were not ”super store” locations, and Tesco filed for bankruptcyon FnE and closed all FnE stores ‘coz they rolled out too many stores at one time. ![]() Both stores closed due to corporate decisions to close multiple stores nationally. Note: For people who are unaware, both WalMart and the FnE grocery that were located off of Promenade were small but profitable locations and workers at the locations were surprised by the closures. For some time now, we’ve had no big box stores located in DTLB - and that’s true even though we have ample parking in structures and a community filled with disabled and seniors who only commute via public transportation. Currently, the closest Target to DTLB is nearly 40 minutes each way by bus. ![]() When Fresh and Easy closed, I contacted Target again, and that time I told them about the location where they could now have a Target located directly across from a separate 24hr Target grocery if they wanted to try that. When WalMart closed (about a decade ago), I contacted Target corporate in New York to tell them about the open location as an anchor store walking distance from a full parking structure. Without city gov’s stepping in and demanding diversification, developers can kill local communites. All of SoCal suffers from our high real estate values driving certain types of development. What’s really going on in a lot of places is that local politicans are cashing in politically on public perception of them “addressing the housing crisis” by allowing larger residential developments while at the same time they’re profiting (often both politically and fiscally) off relationships with developers who are making bank by only building rental housing which gives them their highest ROI. For apartments, they need at least 1 1/2 covered spaces for residents plus any complex w/ more than 10 units also has to provide 1 on-site guest spot for every 4 units. Meanwhile, all newly built housing, regardless of size, is required to have some off-street on-site parking included. In DTLB, that means they can use dedicated access to existing parking structures (any business in a commercial complex can just provide free structure access as well - the Cinemark at The Pike does this). county, commercial developments up to 750 ft² are allowed to provide by-right off-site parking rather than dedicated on-site. In fact, it can be easier to provide parking to small retail locations. For example, the Vons located at Broadway and Atlantic was fully renovated to update the store - and Vons Albertson’s is actually contracted to be leasing that location for at least the next decade! The developers aren’t even building condos for sale, and they aren’t selling unoccupied property to businesses who have long term occupation intent. In congested Long Beach, almost all new building is community rental housing. Usually they involve drinking heavily, but sometimes we get more creative.
